Art 1 Course Outline

 

Course Description

 

Art 1 is an introductory program of study at the high school level that involves a broad range of media, techniques, and processes.  Students will continue to develop prior knowledge and skills in the creation and study of works of art and design.  Building on concepts and skills acquired in the elementary and middle level courses, students will increase their knowledge of production, critical analysis, history and culture, aesthetics, and connections among the visual arts, other content areas, and everyday life.

 

Course Competencies

 

  1. Apply proficient skills and craftsmanship in selecting and using various media, techniques, and processes to create original expressive works of art.
  2. Understand how to select and use the elements of art and principles of design applied through various media, techniques, and processes related to the communication of meaning.
  3. Understand how media, techniques, and processes create effects that evoke a range of responses.
  4. Utilize perceptual skills and apply visual arts vocabulary to make informed judgments while creating and studying works of art.
  5. Understand that a wide range of critical analysis theories exist and provide valid methods for studying the characteristics of works of art and design.
  6. Know that context is a factor in determining the roles, functions, and purposes of artists, works of art, and visual arts careers differently according to culture, time, and place.
  7. Know universal themes, concepts, forms, and functions that recur works of art and design across cultures, times, and places.
  8. Analyze how factors of time and the visual arts influence each other.
  9. Know different theories of aesthetics.
  10. Analyze how contextual factors affect the way people respect, value, and derive meaning form art.
  11. Integrate visual arts concepts and skills with knowledge in other subject areas to provide meaningful tools for everyday life.
  12. Understand how common concepts, technologies, media, and processes of the visual arts relate to those in other subject areas within and outside the arts.

 

Course Procedures

 

Students will need a mature work ethic and will be responsible to engage in all safety precautions taught in the art room.  Students will be introduced to many art media to be used in combination with the elements of art and the skills and techniques needed to create these works.

            Unit test (history of art, elements, techniques, vocabulary)

            Projects for each unit

            Oral presentations with visual aids, power point

            Art entries/competition

            Art show entries

All assignments are designed to show where students have met and mastered the standards for the course.

Description of Work

A

95-100

Consistently demonstrates an exceptional level of quality and effort.  Having all work in on time and complete to exceed expectations.

B

85-94

Consistently demonstrates proficient knowledge with a good effort and quality of work.  All assignments are complete and in on time.

C

75-84

Demonstrates proficient knowledge and the ability to apply and analyze elements of art.  Works shows average effort.  A few assignments may be missed or late.

D

70-74

Work shows minimal effort and some assignments are late.  Demonstrates a basic understanding of recalling or comprehending elements of art.

F

Below 70

Understanding is below basic in relations to elements of art.  Work is of poor quality and does not meet standards or expectations.

 

 

Extra Help

 

Teacher will be available from 7:30-7:50 a.m. and 3:20-3:30 p.m. daily.  Teacher will also be available during the daily planning period by appointment.  Extra tutorials are available through student government, Beta Club and National Honor Society for written assignments.
